FTC / FDCPA – Can my federal benefits be garnished?

Compliance > FDCPA
Q:  Can my federal benefits be garnished?

A:  Many federal benefits are generally exempt from garnishment, though they might still be garnished to pay delinquent taxes, alimony, child support, or student loans. States have their own laws about which state benefits can be garnished.

The FTC enforces the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), which makes it illegal for debt collectors to use abusive, unfair, or deceptive practices when they collect debts.  This Q&A was obtained from Federal Trade Commission’s Debt Collection FAQs which may be found here:  https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/debt-collection-faqs
