FTC / FDCPA – Where do I report a debt collector for an alleged violation?

Compliance > FDCPA
Q:  Where do I report a debt collector for an alleged violation?

A:  Report any problems you have with a debt collector to:

• your state attorney general’s office (https://naag.org/)
• the Federal Trade Commission (https://ftc.gov/complaint)
• the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (https://cfpb.gov/complaint)

Many states have their own debt collection laws that are different from the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Your attorney general’s office can help you determine your rights under your state’s law.

The FTC enforces the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), which makes it illegal for debt collectors to use abusive, unfair, or deceptive practices when they collect debts.  This Q&A was obtained from Federal Trade Commission’s Debt Collection FAQs which may be found here:  https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/debt-collection-faqs
